Reducing Pain and improving mobility

Joint Injections

Joint injections are medical procedures where we use a needle to deliver medication directly into a joint space to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation from conditions like arthritis, offering temporary relief and improving mobility.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Performed in a doctor's office, often with X-ray (fluoroscopy) or ultrasound guidance.
  • The skin is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is used to numb the area.
  • The medication is then injected directly into the joint.
  • The procedure is quick, usually taking 10-15 minutes, with discomfort mainly from the initial numbing.

Benefits & Considerations

  • Benefits: Significant pain relief, reduced inflammation, and improved joint function, allowing for better physical therapy.
  • Duration: Effects often last for several months, but it's not a permanent fix; the underlying condition may return.
  • Role in Treatment: Injections are often part of a broader plan including rest, exercise, and physical therapy, not a standalone cure.
  • Risks: Potential for temporary swelling, bruising, increased blood sugar (for diabetics), or, rarely, infection.
